About Thomas

I am a maths tutor with ten years of experience working with students from age 8-18. Primarily I teach GCSE and A-Level students; at present I am working with over a dozen students at the GCSE/Pre-Calculus level in addition to my A-Level students.

For the past 4 years I have been living and working in BC, Canada in pursuit of my outdoor hobbies. I am on Pacific Time (GMT -8) and available for after-school sessions in UK time.

Due to my time difference, when messaging please be aware I may not respond until the evening!

About Me

The joy and challenge of mathematics has always been a large part of my life, from participating in maths olympiads and running revision classes at school to my studies at Warwick University and beyond to recreational reading on infinity, statistics or symmetry. I find the purity of the subject, the neatness and objectivity, fascinating, and brings this enthusiasm and deep understanding to my teaching.

Since teaching roles at University, I have been accepting students for tuition both online and in person, and ten years after graduating I have coached dozens of students through their studies and exams at a high level. With a focus on high school math and beyond, I bring an understanding of calculus and algebra which allows me to provide students operating at the upper end of their school careers with insights and context they will not find on the regular curriculum, and do so in a friendly and informal manner.

Outside of mathematics, I am a keen outdoorsman and can often be found attached to a rope and up a cliff or running on the many trails in the sea to sky corridor (all of which seem to be uphill). I enjoy creative writing, loud music and run a dungeons and dragons game for friends in Squamish and Whistler.

Tutoring Style

I run generally quite relaxed sessions; students are encouraged to ask questions, and we can discuss whatever we need to. As much as exams and grades are important, I think that the key to learning and retaining information is to be inquisitive, to explore beyond the textbooks and see how what we find in the classrooms and labs underlies everything we see in the world around us.

For all students, and in particular for A-level, I try to keep myself available through the week for ad-hoc questions. I see little value in having a problem arise on Monday and having to wait until a session on Sunday before we address it together. Depending on the depth of the query it may be something to address next session, but it can be as simple as getting a 'plus' where there should be a 'minus', which is a horrible one to lose sleep and marks over!
