About Sian
I am a highly experienced geography teacher with a passion for communicating my love of the subject, backed up by an impressive track record in getting the best out of students, both academically and personally. As an examiner and specialist revision tutor I can also bring practical skills to the role, specifically exam technique and essay writing skills.
In terms of geography, my unit specialisms are glaciation, fluvial geography and earth hazards - I've climbed several active volcanoes - place making processes, geography of food and geopolitical options. My regional specialisms are Bristol & Bath, Dorset, Spain and Latin America, particularly Mexico and Central America where I've lived, worked and done research. I prefer to use innovative and creating methods to communicate ideas and concepts, I consider myself to be a very dynamic tutor who's able to draw on a great deal of personal geographical experience from outside the classroom to bring the subject to life. I tell all students that my classes I have three golden rules: (1) one, laugh at my (bad) jokes; (2) indulge my love of rock music (I play guitar in a band) and (3) obviously the most important, don't put yourself down. It's a good icebreaker but it does set the agenda; I'm a huge believer in encouraging self-confidence and working to increase self-belief. With A level and IB students especially but also GCSE students I like to get students into the habit of independent study, stressing the importance of reading and researching beyond the text book as the key to academic success.
* Please note that due to research/fieldwork commitments between now and Christmas my availability is a little irregular. To compensate I've reduced my fees for the October, November and December. On the upside, you will be getting lessons live from Mexico and Central America where I'll be climbing volcanoes! Normal service will be resumed in January.*
Tutoring Style
My tutoring methodology is dynamic and student-centred, focusing on the job in hand which is to help you get the highest possible grade and into your university of choice. It's a threefold process: (1) consolidate existing subject knowledge, (2) develop and amplify existing existing subject knowledge and (3) drawing on my experience as an examiner and moderator, improve exam technique. Engagement is key, as is making the most of every minute of tuition.
