About Pete

As an experienced A-level Mathematics and Further Mathematics tutor, I work closely with students and families to provide consistent, thoughtful support throughout the academic year — with focused preparation during the crucial months leading up to summer examinations.

With over 20 years of teaching and private tutoring experience in leading London schools and colleges, I understand both the academic demands of the course and the pressures students can feel along the way. My aim is not only to secure excellent results, but to build confidence, independence and genuine mathematical understanding.

Many of my students have gone on to study Mathematics at Oxbridge and Ivy League universities. Others have achieved the UCAS grades needed for competitive degree courses, or strengthened their future prospects by securing a strong Mathematics A-level. Whatever the goal, I work patiently and systematically to help each student reach their full potential.

Parents often value my clear communication, structured approach and calm, approachable manner. I believe students perform at their best when they feel supported, understood and challenged in the right way.

I hold a BSc (Hons) in Mathematics from the University of Warwick and completed my PGCE and MEd at the University of Cambridge. I have also been invited on three occasions by the University of Warwick to deliver international Masterclasses to fellow Mathematics teachers.

Tutoring Style

Mathematics is a cumulative discipline: without secure foundations, future progress becomes increasingly fragile. Many students, through no fault of their own, develop gaps in their understanding that later undermine confidence and performance. A core strength of my tuition lies in quickly diagnosing these gaps and addressing them with precision. Rather than simply revisiting content, I implement targeted, structured support that rebuilds understanding from first principles and ensures long-term retention.

I teach exclusively online and have refined a delivery style that is dynamic, interactive, and highly effective. One-to-one virtual tuition often removes the pressures associated with classroom environments, enabling students to think aloud, take intellectual risks, and ask questions more freely. I place strong emphasis on cultivating a professional yet supportive working relationship, creating a space in which students feel both challenged and reassured.

Online delivery can provide tangible academic advantages. Students can share their working in real time, allowing for immediate feedback, correction, and refinement, digital tools facilitate the use of visual representations and dynamic demonstrations, helping students grasp abstract concepts more intuitively, and structured interactivity ensures that lessons are not passive but intellectually engaging and purposeful.

Although the A-level syllabus content is fixed, my strategic approach varies according to each student’s goals and timeframe. A student beginning in Year 12 benefits from a carefully sequenced programme that builds conceptual depth and inter-topic connections over time. This long-term development fosters mathematical fluency and adaptability — qualities essential for tackling unfamiliar or high-level examination questions.

Conversely, students seeking support closer to examinations receive focused, high-impact revision tailored to maximise marks efficiently. In both cases, sessions integrate rigorous content mastery with systematic exam-question practice, ensuring students understand not only what to do, but why it works and how to communicate it effectively under examination conditions.

My calm, measured approach helps students build confidence alongside competence. Combined with my thorough knowledge of the A-level syllabus and my experience as an examiner — providing detailed insight into mark schemes, assessment objectives, and exam technique — I offer tuition that is both academically robust and strategically aligned with examination success.
