About Lisa
Hi! My name's Lisa and I am an English and Drama/Theatre Studies Tutor. My qualifications are up to a Masters Level with 12 years of experience in live Touring, West End and Regional Theatre and Events.
I have been tutoring English to British and foreign students for over 15 years, working as a part time tutor until 2021 when I decided to do the profession full time. I have worked with all age ranges in ESL, exam preparation for 11+, 8+ and in depth text analysis. I tailor the lesson to suit the needs of the student using the AQA, OCR, WJEC and Scottish curriculum for GCSE, A levels, National 5s and Scottish Highers as well as helping degree students with their essays, personal statement, college applications and dissertations. Throughout my years in tutoring I have seen some amazing achievements from students, from high level students reaching grade 9, to students who are seeking to achieve that all important pass rate. I tutor texts such as Macbeth, Merchant of Venice, Romeo and Juliet, Midsummer Nights Dream, As You Like It and Antony and Cleopatra; with first hand experience of working indepth on these plays, understanding their themes, characters and language. Other literature that students have come to understand in more detail is Jekyll and Hyde, Lord of the Flies, Journey's End, Blood Brothers, Animal Farm, Poetry Anthologies, Frankenstein and A Handful of Dust. As well as Literature I have been tutoring English Language for AQA, OCR, Edexcel, International Cambrige and WJEC, exploring different techinques in unseen non-fiction and fiction texts. Last year I had 100% of my students pass their GCSEs in English Language, Literature and Drama with over 95% achieving at least 2 grades higher than predicted, and 100% of students studying A Level reaching above their predicted grades. I have worked in school facilities delivering group session classes for GCSE and A level studies, and have been a facilitator at mulitple universities such as Oxford, working on Shakespearean plays.
Tutoring Style
I take a friendly approach, asking students to engage in critical analysis and conversation to build essay structures, giving my students ownership and enjoyment in their learning. I try and explain all the elements that are needed in each question, breaking down the theory and practise, to help students connect their opinions and critical thinking to the exam questions. In all lessons I try to create a relaxed atmosphere so that students are able to feel comfortable in their learning environment, and to focus their attention on the areas they are finding challenging. I use a mixture of past papers, tailored worksheets and creative examples to movtivate students to reach their full potential. I have an enthusiasm and passion for teaching and a goal to build confidence in my students of any age.
