About Kayleigh

Hi, I’m Kayleigh! I’m a final year medical student at Exeter University. I have 4 years of experience tutoring GCSE and A-level biology and chemistry. I started tutoring because I know how challenging and disheartening it can be to catch up on lots of missed content. In Year 12, I missed a significant portion of sixth form due to illness and found it nearly impossible to catch up. I understand how overwhelming it is bridging those gaps while learning new material. As a tutor, my main focus is being empathetic, patient, and supportive of my students. I recognise the value of building an environment of trust and non-judgment to allow students to feel comfortable to say they don't understand something. I hope to build both their knowledge and confidence. I also try to make my lessons as affordable as possible, as I recognise the cost of living is so high at the moment.

Over the past 4 years, I’ve worked with a wide range of students: those who have fallen behind due to illness, those struggling with exam technique, and those dealing with exam anxiety. I try to identify each student’s individual needs and tailor my lessons to help them reach their full potential. Seeing my students' confidence grow and them achieve fantastic exam results has been one of the most rewarding parts of my time working as a tutor.

I can offer one-off lessons if there's one topic, in particular, you or your child need some help with, or regular lessons on a weekly or fortnightly basis. If you’re looking for a supportive tutor who will help tackle any challenges with content or technique, I'd love to help!

Tutoring Style

I try to make my teaching as engaging and tailored to individual students as possible! I'm quite a visual learner myself so I like to use pictures, diagrams and animations to aid my teaching. I try to make my lessons as interactive as possible because I know I find it so much harder to learn if I'm just being talked at, so why would my students be any different? If students don't understand something the first time I teach it, I change my approach and way of teaching and won't give up until they're happy!

Some students know exactly what they'd like to work on, which is great and I try to plan lessons that address the topics or skills they have identified. Other students aren't sure, and that's totally fine too! We can go through some short knowledge questions in our first session to identify any areas that need addressing. My sessions normally follow the format of a short lesson on a topic followed by some questions to help apply the lesson content. Normally, between January and late March we'll work on learning new content. Then, from late March/April, we will start going through exam papers- working predominantly on exam technique.

However, none of this is set in stone and I am adaptable to whatever my students would find helpful. I am open to working with students and parents to make a plan that will work for them.
