About Jamie
Hello! I’m Jamie and I study Japanese and Economics at SOAS University of London.
Background
I've spent the past six years of my life studying Economics. First this was at GCSE level. Then it was during my A-Levels. Now, it's at degree level. Why have I dedicated so much time towards Economics you ask? My response is that I'm simply burning with passion for the subject! The way Economic theory presents its analyses on individual behaviour at the micro level, and links wider variables together at the macro level is simply beautiful. When I started University I decided that I'd like to immerse myself deeper into the subject, and I thought that the best way to do this was to use my knowledge in such a way that helps budding Economists studying their A-Levels. Ever since I started tutoring 2 years ago, I've aimed to be the sort of tutor who not only boosts the grades and confidence of his students, but also the sort that allows his students to develop their own passion for Economics, as I have done over the years. After all, loving the subject is the best way to motivate oneself to study it and exceed, is it not?
Teaching experience
Across different platforms and including my private bookings, I've amassed around 70 (and counting) hours of tutoring experience. Outside of tutoring Economics I've held study workshops for A-Level History students at my alma mater, I've written model essays for an author of A-Level Psychology textbooks, and I help Japanese natives learn English on almost a daily basis.
Tutoring Style
General approach
In general, my tutoring style is student-centred. The student is always at the centre of consideration when I plan my lessons - in the sense that each session is tailored to fit their capabilities and requirements. If the student is working at an A grade and is aiming for an A*, I throw in some additional knowledge which could provide the student with a further boost. With lower level students who are looking to improve their grades, I walk them through the syllabus in an engaging and lucid manner.
What you will experience during my lessons
Regardless of the student and their grades, my lessons always set out to maximise their engagement. The lessons provide an integrated mix of theoretical knowledge on Economics, and approaches to applying this to exam questions. Some lessons may focus purely on theory when need be (for instance, if the student is struggling with a particular area of the specification), and closer to exams, other lessons may focus purely on exam questions. But ultimately, I aim to provide a holistic experience that allows the students to excel in all dimensions of the subject.
Other details
Outside of lessons, I provide additional resources to supplement the students’ learning. These may be detailed subject notes when I feel like the student will benefit from them, essay guides, model essays, or other materials of the like. If the student has the time to complete any homework tasks I also set straightforward assignments such as writing essays. These are always handed back with feedback and grades.
