I am a qualified secondary and sixth-form English teacher with extensive experience teaching and tutoring GCSE and A-Level English Language and Literature. I have a strong working knowledge of the AQA specification, assessment objectives, and current exam requirements, and I regularly prepare students for both internal and external assessments. Alongside my classroom teaching, I have led targeted intervention groups, supported exam preparation programmes, and mentored students who required additional academic guidance or confidence-building in English. Through these interventions, I have helped students make significant progress, with many improving by one to two grades between mock and final examinations. I aim to create a warm, welcoming, and comfortable learning environment where students feel safe, supported, and confident to contribute their ideas. I believe students learn best when they are relaxed and encouraged, so I place a strong emphasis on building confidence around English. My lessons are structured and purposeful, with clear goals and frequent opportunities for students to check and develop their understanding.

I use a range of strategies to support memory retention and active learning, including short recap activities at the start of lessons and regular use of mini whiteboards for effective assessment for learning. I also use targeted questioning and cold-calling in a supportive way to ensure all students are engaged, and contributing; while challenging and helping them articulate their ideas clearly. Lessons are personalised to the individual student’s needs, whether this involves building foundational skills, developing higher-level analysis, or refining exam technique.

For exam preparation and independent study, I explicitly teach effective study skills, including the use of flashcards for key quotations and terminology, detailed mind maps to organise ideas, and regular practice with past papers. I guide students through how to approach questions, structure responses, and apply assessment criteria confidently, helping them feel motivated, prepared, and in control of their learning.
