The University of Sheffield - MSc Statistics
I have been tutoring Mathematics to a wide range of ages and abilities for over ten years and run my own successful business. I started with a few revision sessions to help a friend’s child and now have a wealth of experience in preparing students for A-level maths exams for a variety of different exam boards. I also have extensive experience in delivering distance learning, embracing technology to overcome the challenges of lockdowns by delivering lessons via video conferencing. I have a strong academic background, completing my first degree in French and Geography at the University of St Andrews before qualifying as a teacher with a PGCE at Nottingham University. I taught Geography at a prestigious school until taking a career break to be with my children. I have always loved maths so after self-study to cover the A-level syllabus, I enrolled with the Open University to do a degree in Mathematics, where I obtained a first. I am now undertaking a Masters degree in Statistics at the University of Sheffield. In addition to my teaching experience, I am also an examination marker for International Baccalaureate. I am a mum to two teenagers as well as a maths tutor so I am fully aware of the demands and pressures on young people. Outside of work I enjoy allotment gardening, playing trumpet in a local band and walking our very lively spaniel!
My lessons focus on the needs of the students and I adjust the pace of lessons to suit their learning style and requirements. In a standard lesson, I ask my students which area they feel that they would like some support with, and we work on questions based on this. My familiarity with the syllabus means I am able to support students in consolidating their learning and stretch them when the foundation is secure. The one-to-one setting also helps students gain in confidence and allows them to express themselves more freely.
