About Emma
Having completed my MPhys and PhD in Physics at Cardiff University I later completed my teacher training & PGCE at Aberystwyth University in 2014. Although my degree background is in Physics I have taught both Mathematics and Physics at A level as well as Maths, Physics, Computer Science & Digital Technology at GCSE for over ten years, most recently being Head of Maths & Computing for several years.
I have been tutoring students for the last six years, providing individualised tuition for each student based on their strengths and areas for development.
I have experience in successfully supporting pupils with additional learning needs, in particular autism and ADHD as well as dyslexia and dyscalculia.
I am also an A level maths examiner. This has given me a greater insight into the common misconceptions and mistakes that students make as well as how to interpret mark schemes and what exam questions are looking to assess.
Tutoring Style
My tutoring style is focused on the needs of the individual student and will adapt as required.
For anxious students we will start by focusing on securing the basic skills required, and then building confidence from this foundation. I have experience with students with dyslexia and dyscalculia and often find a visual approach helps to build a greater understanding. I find that regular sessions over a period of time allows an unpressured environment to get to know the student and to build confidence.
I also enjoy stretching more able pupils to achieve the best grades possible and have supported multiple students to achieve A/A* grades at GCSE and A level. I have also taught the WJEC L2 Additional Maths course to GCSE pupils in school with many gaining distinctions.
At all levels the focus is on using exam questions to build a greater depth of understanding and learn how to apply the concepts learnt to new scenarios as well as avoiding common misconceptions. It is also important to make sure that students are able to communicate that understanding to the examiner in an effective manner so that they don't loose marks through jumbled answers that are difficult to follow.
