My name is Déna and I’m in my third year of BSc (Hons) Biology at the University of York. I began teaching Maths and English in 2019, and continued working online during the pandemic and at university. I am now a highly rated 1:1 biology tutor. Since my tutoring takes place online over different platforms, I am well versed in a multitude learning spaces and am able to adapt my lessons to various virtual learning environments.
Before tutoring sessions begin, I start by discussing what the student and parents/guardians looking for from our sessions: whether they’re aiming for top grades or simply want to boost their confidence, and then I work with them plan a route achieve this. I also like to ask my students to create a personal goal, such as increasing their love for the subject. My lessons integrate spaced-repetition, a technique that improves memory while reducing workload. Then, to make sure they’ve mastered the topics we’ve covered, we’ll work through some practice questions together (perfecting exam technique along the way), and I’ll leave them some work to complete between sessions. At the end of each session I send a lesson report to the parents/carers to ensure they know what has happened in each session, and are aware of what the student has done well, as well as what could be improved. I’ll also make them aware of any work I have set. This allows me to build strong relationships with parents and students, which allows for more successful lessons.
