About Bill

Hi, I’m Bill! 👋

I’m an early career researcher currently finishing my PhD in Physics - but one of my biggest passions outside of research is teaching. Over the past six years, I’ve delivered more than 4,000 lessons in Maths, Further Maths, and Physics, helping students of all abilities, from GCSE to Master's level, from rural secondary schools to Oxford University, grow in confidence and achieve their goals.

To me, Maths is the language of the universe, and Physics is the way we turn that language into meaningful sentences. I love helping students discover this “universal code” for themselves. My approach is simple: break tricky concepts into bite-sized steps, build understanding at a steady pace, and show you that perseverance really does pay off. With the right guidance, even the most intimidating topics become manageable.

Because I’m only a few years out of A-levels myself, I remember exactly what it’s like to be in your shoes. I’m very in touch with the current exam system, know the common pitfalls, and can share plenty of practical tips to boost your grades. Whether you’re preparing for GCSEs, A-levels, or just want to deepen your understanding, I’ll meet you where you are and tailor lessons to your learning style.

Above all, my aim is not just to help you “get through” your exams, but to show you how exciting and rewarding Maths and Physics can be when they finally click.

About me

I’m coming to the end of my PhD in Physics, where I’ve been researching gravitational waves, and trying to figure out what they can teach us about the very start of the universe. Alongside my research, I’ve published three papers in reputable journals, and during my Master’s degree I was fortunate to receive two awards: one for being the top student in the School of Physics, Biosciences, and Geography, and another for the best theoretical thesis for my work on string theory.

Outside of academia, I have a creative side too! I sing and play piano in a band, as well as drums and guitar, and I’m currently learning the saxophone. When I’m not making music, you’ll often find me rock climbing, tinkering with computing projects, or just exploring new challenges.

I bring this same mix of curiosity, discipline, and creativity into my teaching. Whether it’s helping you tackle tricky exam questions or sparking your curiosity about the universe, I aim to make learning an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

Tutoring Style

I strongly believe that Maths and Physics are best learned through doing, not just listening. Just like learning to play an instrument, Maths and Physics are skills which you refine by practice. That’s why I take a practical, problem-focused approach in my lessons. Answering carefully chosen questions gives you instant feedback on your understanding and shows you exactly where you’re strong — and where we can focus our efforts.

I place a lot of emphasis on selecting questions that sit just beyond your comfort zone. This “sweet spot” is where real progress happens: challenging enough to stretch your thinking, but not so difficult that it feels overwhelming. Over time, this builds not only your subject knowledge but also your resilience and confidence, as you see yourself mastering problems you once thought impossible.

Alongside this, I’ll make sure we revisit and consolidate your core concepts regularly. This combination of stretching your boundaries while strengthening your foundations helps you develop a deep and lasting understanding, rather than short-term memorisation.

Most importantly, I’ll tailor my teaching to your learning style and goals. For you, that might mean breaking ideas down visually; for someone else, it could be step-by-step reasoning or repeated practice until it clicks. My role is to guide you towards those “lightbulb moments” when everything falls into place — and to show you that with the right strategies, even the toughest topics are within your reach.

For more information about how I can tailor support to help you, please feel free to send me a message for a chat!
