About Alice
Hi, my name is Alice and I tutor Biology and Chemistry at GCSE, as well as Chemistry at A level. I have always had a deep interest in science which led me to pick Maths, Chemistry and Biology at A level and go on to study medicine at the University of Manchester. I am now in my fourth year and enjoy how it has allowed me to carry on with my scientific interests whilst also including more interaction with people.
I have been online tutoring for 3 years now and have helped many students of different levels utilise their potentials and achieve the grades they need to succeed. I started tutoring because I wanted to help people to do well and because I enjoy doing it. I know that students find exams very stressful and I have lots of great techniques to help them relax in the exams and also techniques to help them achieve the maximum amount of marks possible. I have many five star reviews from previous students.
Tutoring Style
In the first meeting we would first discuss the main problems that the student is facing; is it primarily content based, a problem with exam technique, or is it a bit of both.
If their main issue is struggling with content, then I would create a powerpoint with all of the information from a topic that we can go through so that they can learn the content. This is then be followed by questions related to the topic to ensure that they are consolidating the knowledge and find any knowledge gaps at the time of learning, they will be easier to fix when the information is fresh in their head rather than further down the line.
If the problem is mainly to do with exam technique, most of the lessons would be built around doing past papers and exam questions. If any knowledge is missing, we can of course do some lessons on content. When answering the questions, I will first ask the student to give it a go themselves, as I think a big part on doing well in exams is trying to answer the question and get a mark or two even if they are not sure. I will then give them some tips and hints on how to answer the question and we will go through it together.
Another important part of exam technique is the approach to different questions and this is often based on the command word in the question, this affects what the question is asking and is very important to consider if you want to gain top marks. A session on this can be really helpful for those trying to push up into the highest grades.
