About Sophie
I'm Sophie; I'm a Physics and Maths tutor for ages 11-18 and a recent first class graduate of Physics from Oxford University.
I have four years of tutoring experience in Maths, Further Maths and Physics, teaching students from GCSE through to A-Level across a range of UK and international exam boards. During this time I have worked with a variety of students, from high-flying A* students and Oxbridge candidates looking to push themselves further, to students who have lacked confidence in a subject and wanted to make significant progress towards their target grades. I have also worked one-to-one as the sole tutor for a mature student, supporting them from a D to an A.
Whatever a student’s starting point, I treat every learner with the same patience, creating a welcoming environment where they can feel comfortable asking questions and developing their confidence. I am passionate about helping young people engage with subjects I love and take great pride in seeing students make progress and realise what they are capable of.
Tutoring Style
My sessions will be discussion-based. I like to work through interesting problems rather than simply churning through a list of topics. I use probing questions to encourage students to think their way towards an answer, developing both their problem-solving skills and a deep understanding of the subject. For me, understanding why something works is far more valuable than simply memorising facts, and it makes learning more engaging while providing a much stronger foundation for tackling exams.
I encourage my students to be unafraid to ask questions and to admit when they do not understand something. I have seen how easily students mistake finding something difficult for a lack of ability which then prevents them from asking for help. My sessions are a judgement-free space where questions are encouraged and mistakes are part of the learning process. Ultimately, I want my students not only to achieve better results, but to develop the confidence and curiosity to genuinely enjoy the subjects they are studying.
