Hello, I'm Sharryl, a qualified Science Teacher and Second in Charge of Science with over 11 years' experience teaching science across Key Stages 3-5. I hold Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), a PGCE in Science Education with Distinction and a First Class Honours degree in Experimental Biology.

Throughout my career, I have consistently raised attainment for learners across the full ability range, including high-attaining students, disadvantaged learners and students with SEND. My students make rapid progress, with many performing two or three grades above their target grade within six months. I believe outstanding results are built on deep understanding rather than memorisation. Rather than teaching science as a collection of disconnected facts, I help students uncover the story that connects scientific ideas. By developing their understanding of the language of science, how scientific knowledge is constructed, and using metacognitive strategies to become increasingly independent learners, students develop lasting conceptual understanding rather than short-term recall. These foundations enable them not only to succeed in examinations but to think scientifically with confidence.
As a result of these principles, in one A Level Biology cohort of 66 students, 56 achieved an A*, six achieved an A and four achieved a B. My students have also progressed to study at leading universities including MIT, Harvard, Princeton, Stanford and Yale through highly competitive, merit-based scholarships.

Tutoring Style
Every student's learning journey is unique. My first session is always diagnostic because before deciding what to teach, I need to understand the learner in front of me. I take time to identify knowledge gaps, uncover misconceptions and understand the barriers that may be limiting progress. From there, we build a personalised learning pathway that meets students where they are and enables them to make rapid, sustained progress towards their goals.
Many students see science as a collection of disconnected facts that simply need to be memorised. I challenge that perception. My goal is to help students discover the story behind the science - how ideas connect, why concepts matter and how they explain the world around us. By connecting new learning to prior knowledge and real-world contexts, students develop a deeper conceptual understanding that lasts far beyond the examination.
I see tutoring as a partnership rather than a lecture. Students are encouraged to think aloud, ask questions, test ideas and learn from mistakes without fear of judgement. I deliberately create an environment where curiosity is encouraged because genuine learning happens when students feel safe to explore, reflect and refine their thinking. Every success, however small, is recognised and celebrated because confidence grows through meaningful progress.
Alongside developing scientific understanding, I help students become increasingly independent learners. Through carefully structured questioning, purposeful reflection and high-quality feedback, students learn not only what they need to improve, but how to improve it. They develop effective revision strategies, strengthen long-term memory and build the confidence to tackle increasingly complex scientific ideas independently.
As students prepare for GCSE and A Level examinations, we use carefully selected exam-style questions, past papers and examiner reports to develop both subject mastery and examination technique. Rather than simply completing past papers, students learn how to interpret command words, communicate scientific ideas with precision and apply their knowledge confidently to unfamiliar situations.
Ultimately, my goal is not simply to help students achieve higher grades, but to help them become confident, independent scientific thinkers. When students understand how scientific ideas connect and develop the confidence to tackle unfamiliar challenges, examination success becomes the natural outcome of meaningful learning.
