As a senior examiner, I know exactly what exam boards are looking for. Every year, I mark thousands of exam scripts, giving me unique insight into the differences between average, good and top-grade responses. This means I can teach students not only what to write, but how to meet the precise assessment criteria required for success.
My lessons focus on developing high-level analytical and evaluative skills, effective essay structure and organisation, examination technique and time management, academic confidence and independent thinking and subject knowledge and critical understanding.
Parents have described me as a "magician" for the rapid progress their children make in both attainment and confidence. Whether a student is aiming for a Grade 4, Grade 9, A*, or Oxbridge-level preparation, I tailor every lesson to their individual needs and goals.
I hold:
• A First-Class Honours Degree in History
• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
• National Professional Qualification in Leading Literacy (NPQLL)
and other teaching qualifications, along with evidence of marking with various exam-boards.
Throughout my career, I have taught across both primary and secondary education, led English progress initiatives, overseen literacy development strategies, and supported students from a wide range of backgrounds and attainment levels.
I have extensive experience working with high-attaining students aiming for top grades, students preparing for competitive university, applications, SEND learners, including autism, dyslexia and ADHD, SEMH students and students who have lost confidence or fallen behind in their studies.
My approach combines expert teaching, examiner insight and personalised support to ensure every student makes measurable progress. Lessons are engaging, supportive and challenging, with a strong focus on building both academic success and long-term confidence.
If you are looking for an experienced teacher who understands exactly how exams are assessed and how students can maximise their potential, I would be delighted to help. Together, we can develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to achieve outstanding results.
Tutoring Style
My first session is always diagnostic. I spend time talking to the student to identify their strengths and weaknesses, explore their current approach to English, dispel common examiner myths and establish where the quickest improvements can be made. I then create a personalised plan and follow a proven structure tailored to that student’s individual needs.
The first session may feel slightly more conversational than a typical lesson, or occasionally a little more technical, as it includes diagnostic activities focused on writing, analysis and terminology. However, this gives me an invaluable snapshot of the student’s current ability and allows me to formulate the most effective programme of support.
My teaching is focused, structured and highly personalised, but what truly distinguishes my approach is my experience as an examiner. Each year, I mark thousands of examination responses, giving me direct insight into what genuinely gains marks and where commonly taught advice can fall short.
Many students are taught generic techniques, acronyms and formulaic structures that may sound impressive but do not always meet the assessment criteria. As an examiner, I can dispel these myths and show students precisely what examiners reward in real responses.
I teach students how to think like examiners: how to interpret questions accurately, structure answers effectively, analyse language and methods with precision, develop perceptive interpretations and avoid the common mistakes that prevent them from reaching the highest grades.
As examinations approach, I provide comprehensive revision guides that students can download and use independently alongside their lessons. All lesson materials are delivered through Google Docs, allowing students to access their work, resources and personalised feedback in one place. For the best experience, I recommend using a laptop or desktop computer with a keyboard and, where possible, a mouse.
Every lesson is tailored to the individual. Whether a student needs support with confidence, essay writing, examination technique, analytical skills or subject knowledge, I break complex skills into clear, manageable steps that lead to measurable progress.
My approach combines high expectations with genuine encouragement. Students are challenged, supported and given the practical tools they need to become more confident, independent and successful learners. Parents frequently comment not only on improved grades, but also on the confidence and independence their children develop. My goal is simple: to provide expert guidance, examiner insight and proven strategies that help every student reach their full potential.
