Hi, I’m Jake!

I am a full-time online Mathematics tutor and active A-Level examiner with a First-Class Master’s degree in Mathematics. I first started tutoring over 10 years ago while studying for my degree, discovering a real passion for helping students make sense of challenging concepts. After graduating, I went on to teach the A-Level syllabus to university foundation-year students, which only confirmed my desire to teach full time.

Since then, I have worked as a full-time online tutor, delivering thousands of hours of tuition focused exclusively on A-Level Maths and Further Maths. Over the past few years, I have also been working as an A-Level examiner, marking official papers. This has given me even more of an insight into how students gain and lose marks, as well as the common pitfalls many encounter.

My role as a tutor is to understand the unique situation of every student, working closely with them and their families to provide reliable, consistent support throughout the year. I aim to communicate clearly, identify strengths and weaknesses early, and work with each student to create a clear plan for improvement.

My underlying focus across all modules is to develop problem solving skills and critical thinking. Whilst memorising formulas can work for some, this approach can quickly break down due to both scope and exam pressure. I aim to tackle the underlying reason why, shifting from memory to understanding.

As an active A-level examiner, I like to take a similar approach when it comes to exam technique. Many students are comfortable with the content itself, but can lose valuable marks when applying it in exam situations. I help students understand exactly what the examiner is looking for, providing simple strategies that can be applied across topics.

Within the lessons themselves, my priority is creating a stress-free environment where students feel comfortable asking any questions and thinking aloud. We all do our best work when confident, and it can be easy to lose this with A-level maths. Having a supportive space where no question is too simple is essential for rebuilding genuine, long-term confidence.

The structure of sessions naturally adapts throughout the year. During term, we will generally align with what’s being covered in school, whether that’s reviewing key concepts, addressing areas of difficulty or practising exam questions. As the exams approach, we will gradually shift our attention towards exam practice, making sure students have plenty of opportunity to apply what they have learned under exam conditions.

Most importantly, every student is unique. I will always try my best to adapt my teaching, finding the approaches that work best for each individual student and their situation.
