About Steven
I am a current full-time working classroom science teacher in an academy in the North-East and currently have 8 years experience in this role, I currently hold responsibility for the provision for gifted pupils within the school. I have also acted as an examiner for AQA for the past 4 years. Previously I have tutored pupils to A-level in Physics and Maths while completing my PhD in Biophysics, and have previously studied for degrees in theoretical physics and medical physics. I qualified as a teacher in 2018 having been awarded a scholarship to train by the Institute of Physics.
Tutoring Style
I try to teach by attempting to go deeper into the subject matter and minimise the need for rote learning by teaching for understanding. My belief is that, while understanding fully the subject matter is harder at first, it pays dividends in the long-term as it means less has to be memorised. This is tested using probing questioning to make sure the pupil can fully understand and articulate their answer which also helps greatly with the higher GCSE's focus on applying knowledge to potentially unfamiliar situations. I emphasise the correct use of scientific terms and how to build better answers. For calculations I teach my own bespoke method that is designed to maximise marks gained at any skill level, without the need for tricks that try to replace the need for understanding.
