First and foremost, I am passionate about English Language and English Literature, and I fully understand the benefits and pleasure that a strong foundation of literacy can bring to young people's lives. I am also a knowledgeable, highly-skilled English teacher with a wealth of expertise in, and experience of, in person and online tuition. My GCSE progress data is regularly in the top 5% of teachers in my school and I frequently support other members of my department by integrating challenging students into my English groups. 

I have recently completed the National Professional Qualification for Leading Literacy (NPQLL) with Teach First, which has enhanced my skillset. I have a strong track record of helping students find their voice, meet their target grades and become more confident learners. 

My favourite authors are Toni Morrison and Andrea Levy (of Small Island fame), and I decided to become a teacher whilst reading Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger. Additionally, I am an expert in teaching Shakespeare and have taught Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth for over twenty years. Before teaching, I worked as a freelance journalist, musician and DJ, which has helped me to make my lessons more engaging and relevant to the young people that I have had the pleasure to teach. 

Ron Berger (check out his 'Austin's Butterfly' video) is one of my 'teaching heroes', so my teaching style is based on mastery, formative assessment and targeted feedback, as well as building positive, professional relationships with my tutees. I strive to make my lessons relevant, engaging and effective. My work as a senior examiner over the last ten years gives me invaluable insights into how to make exam GCSE preparation as effective as possible. I also have a plethora of tried-and-tested 'quick fixes', which support students to organise their ideas and understand the specific requirements of each question.
