About Gaurav
Hi, I’m Gaurav, a third-year medical student with over four years of tutoring experience, specialising in GCSE and A-level Biology.
I achieved an A in A-level Biology and understand first-hand what is required to succeed in challenging Biology exams. Since starting Medicine, I have continued to develop my knowledge of Biology through subjects such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and pathology. This allows me to explain difficult biological concepts clearly while connecting them to real-world clinical examples where useful.
My approach focuses on both understanding the subject and applying that knowledge effectively in exams. When working with a student, I identify whether marks are being lost because of gaps in knowledge, difficulty applying concepts to unfamiliar situations, or weaknesses in exam technique. I then tailor lessons around these areas, using targeted questions and explanations to address specific weaknesses.
I make extensive use of past papers, exam-style questions and mark schemes because understanding what an examiner is looking for is an important part of achieving high marks. I help students break down questions, recognise command words, use appropriate scientific terminology and structure answers effectively.
Whether a student is struggling with a particular topic, preparing for an upcoming exam, or aiming to move towards the highest grades, my goal is to provide clear, structured and personalised support while helping them become more confident and independent learners.
As a current medical student, I also offer support with UCAT preparation, medical-school interviews and personal statements.
Having personally gone through the medical-school application process, I can provide practical guidance on preparing for each stage of the application. For UCAT preparation, I can help students understand the different question types, develop effective strategies and practise under timed conditions.
For interviews, I can help students prepare for common medical-school interview formats, practise communicating their ideas clearly and confidently, and work through questions involving motivation for Medicine, ethical scenarios, communication and healthcare-related issues.
For personal statements and application preparation, I can help students organise their experiences, reflect on what they have learned and communicate their motivation for Medicine clearly and authentically. My aim is to help students feel prepared and confident while ensuring that their application remains genuinely their own.
Tutoring Style
I believe effective tutoring starts with understanding exactly where a student is struggling. At the beginning of lessons, I assess their understanding through discussion and exam-style questions, looking at whether the main issue is content knowledge, applying concepts or exam technique. This allows me to focus our time on the areas that will make the biggest difference.
I use a combination of clear explanations, worked examples, active recall and targeted exam practice. Rather than simply explaining a topic and moving on, I encourage students to apply what they have learned through questions and then use their answers to identify areas for improvement.
Past papers and mark schemes are a major part of my teaching. Having completed my own A-levels and now studying Medicine, I understand how important it is to move beyond simply memorising Biology content. I teach students how to break down unfamiliar questions, identify exactly what is being asked, recognise command words, include the specific points required for marks and avoid common mistakes.
I also revisit challenging topics regularly using active recall and spaced repetition to help students retain knowledge rather than relying on last-minute revision.
I aim to create a supportive environment where students can ask questions without feeling judged. My goal is not just to help students improve their Biology grade, but to give them the confidence, exam skills and independent study strategies they can continue using outside of our lessons.
