I have a BSc Honours in Chemistry from the University of Natal, South Africa. I worked for AECI (which was part of ICI) and then I trained as a Chemistry teacher at Brunel University. I have taught A-Chemistry for both OCR and AQA for the past 17 years as well as being an examiner so I am familiar with students' misconceptions. I have also taught and tutored GCSE Maths. A lesson of mine was cited in the WNSC 2013 Ofsted report as being one in which “learners were enthusiastically engaged in an activity, and benefitting from imaginative and well-planned activities.” 

Ultimately this is the student's lesson, so in the first instance, I would listen to what the student wants from the lesson, be it help with a topic or how to approach exam questions. Usually I blend the two by teaching in small chunks and then by measuring the learning by using an exam question. My work as an AQA and OCR examiner has given me an awareness of how students' learn which I have used to plan lessons for those less able in particular. I also use tools such as Blooket and Kahoot to make the lesson more fun. I have taught small groups of students as well as 1:1.
