About Alan
Graduating from Manchester and Nottingham Universities before beginning teaching, I taught in a sixth form college teaching just A-level chemistry for over 30 years. As head of department, I took my department to Ofsted outstanding and have taught many 100s of students to A-level success over the years. I have extensive experience of OCR A and AQA specifications both as a teacher and examiner and an in depth knowledge of what it is that marks schemes and examiners are actually looking for. I recently retired from full-time teaching and can, consequently, be very flexible particularly near exam times as regards tutorial times. I am friendly and approachable and prepared to go the extra mile for my tutees.
Tutoring Style
A tutorial that does not involve student activity is of no use. As such, it is important that the students contributes as much as possible. I use questioning to find out what the you know and to help you arrive at solutions to problems. Most tutorials will involve a small amount of teaching from me but mostly answering question from you. Work used in tutorials is largely based around past A-level questions and I set work and am happy to mark any work returned to me. Tutorials alone will not help you, you will need to do the additional consolidation in your own time, I can make the difficult, understandable, but only you can do the work which puts this new skill into long term memory.
