Hi, my name is Ajay I have now been tutoring Maths for over 7 years. I began tutoring back in 2016 when I was studying my BSc in Mathematics and have continued to do so ever since, both online and in person. Since I have graduated, I have pursued a career within actuarial, a heavily maths-based profession, but I have continued to tutor part time as maths is a large part of my life and something I am very passionate about. I thrive off knowing that I can make an impact and difference on the lives of young people studying maths, by helping achieve the grades they need to pursue their future.

Depending on the topic the student wants to go over, I tend to start with a worked example where we dive more into understanding the mathematical concepts behind a problem, rather than just following a set of instructions to tackle the question straight away. Once the student is confident with the concept, we can begin to work through easier examples together, all the way through to high level exam questions, where we can then focus more on exam technique as well. My professional experience also allows me to provide real life examples on where we might use certain concepts, something that I have noticed helps the students’ understanding much more. I also tend to set exam questions for homework, where we can go over any mistakes the following lesson, before moving onto the next topic.

During my years as a tutor, I have not only tutored students on topics they have learnt in school, but I have also taught the whole syllabus independently to students, so I have an in-depth knowledge of the whole course. 

As a tutor, I like to build rapport with my students, so that they see me more as a peer rather than a teacher. I emphasise that there are no ‘silly questions’ and to ask as many as they can for them to maximise their understanding. A lot of my students also come to me for university and career advice, where my experience working in non-educational industries comes in handy. Many of my previous students from over the years have continued to stay in touch, whether it be over email or LinkedIn, where I have been able to offer them advice during university and even as postgraduates.
