About Ben
Hello! I’m Ben, a qualified Science Teacher specialising in Biology and Physics with additional responsibility as a Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) in a secondary school.
Alongside my classroom teaching, I lead and coordinate support for pupils with additional needs, working closely with staff, parents, and external agencies to remove barriers to learning. This has given me specialist expertise in identifying misconceptions quickly, adapting explanations, and supporting students who may struggle with confidence, focus, or complex scientific content.
I hold a First-Class Honours degree in Sport and Exercise Science, with a specialism in human biology and biomechanics. I began tutoring students during my PGCE training and have since developed extensive experience helping GCSE and A-Level pupils secure strong outcomes in Biology and Physics.
I have taught across multiple exam boards, including AQA, OCR, Edexcel GCSE Science, and IGCSE, giving me a strong understanding of different specifications, assessment styles, and exam requirements. I am experienced in teaching across the full GCSE Science curriculum, including required practicals and exam technique, with a focus on helping students apply their knowledge effectively in exam conditions.
Based on my results over the past three years, pupils I support improve by an average of two GCSE grades, with most achieving grades 7–9 in Biology and Physics.
Tutoring Style
My tutoring is highly personalised and focused on identifying and addressing each pupil’s individual learning needs. I begin by assessing current understanding to highlight strengths and pinpoint gaps in knowledge, which then informs a structured and targeted learning plan for each student.
Lessons are designed to build both subject knowledge and exam confidence through clear explanations, guided practice, and regular questioning to check understanding. I place a strong emphasis on exam technique, including how to interpret questions, structure responses, and apply scientific knowledge effectively in GCSE and A-Level assessments.
I use a supportive and encouraging approach throughout, creating a positive learning environment where pupils feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and developing their understanding at their own pace. Alongside subject content, I also focus on developing effective study skills and independent learning strategies to support long-term academic progress and exam success.
