Getting into Medicine Conference

We are excited to announce our first ever Getting into Medicine Conference! This free online event will inspire and inform anyone who is considering a career in medicine.

The day is packed full of everything students need to know in order to start their journey into medicine. Our incredible host will provide students with a complete overview of the medical application process, from how to pick a university and course to acing interviews and everything in between. Our many guest speakers will also share their most valuable advice and experiences. Each session will include Q&A opportunities, so if you have a question you’re dying to ask, this is your chance to get it answered!

The conference will be hosted by the incredible Dr Daisy Newberry. Daisy has a BSc from UCL in Immunology, Infectious Diseases and Cellular Pathology and is now working as a Junior Doctor in Brighton.

The conference will take place on Zoom. The link to join will be sent to registrants the day before the start of the event. Please check your junk folder if you haven’t received it!

Session What’s Covered Speaker(s)
GCSE and A-level Options Your host for the day Daisy will talk you through which subjects you need to have and what grades you need to achieve to get into medical school.  
How to pick your university and course There are so many universities and courses, so how do you pick where to apply to? Daisy will give you an overview of the different medical schools and important factors to consider when choosing your course.  
Extra curricular activities and work experience This section will show you different ways of gaining work experience and what is most beneficial for your medical school application. Our guest panel will explain what they did for their work experience and how they got their placements.

An introduction to the UCAT and BMAT This session will give you an overview of what the exams entail, how best to prepare for them, and whether you should sit just one or both.  
Your Personal Statement This section will explain what to include and the dos and don’ts of writing your personal statement. Daisy will take you through some good and bad examples so you know what to look out for when it comes to writing your own.  
The Interview We will explain some of the most common interview methods you will come across. Our guest speakers will show you how to prepare and give insights into common mistakes candidates make.

Graduate Medicine and Alternative Routes into Medicine Another path into medicine is to choose to do graduate medicine. We will go through which universities offer this option and the funding options. Our guest panel will discuss their journeys into medicine.

Why choose medicine? What is studying medicine like? This section will explore the benefits of both studying and having a career in medicine and what you should be aware of before choosing this career path. We will give you an insight into what it’s really like as a medical student.  
Careers in medicine Getting into university is only the start of your journey! Three doctors present what they do, share their stories and give you an idea of the breadth of options available to you once you qualify.

  1. Will there be an audio recording of this event afterwards? This would be ideal for my daughter but she is preparing for online exams and as such will not be able to attend the session. I think this is a great opportunity for her to know what studying medicine is all about. Thank you very much for this.
